Inspired by the magnificent Canadian landscape of Heiltskuk Icefield in British Columbia, the Glaciers Rug depicted the converging moment of Silverthrone Glacier and Klinaklini Glacier. As the glacier carved a beautiful curvature into the mountainous wilderness, it expressed tremendous natural forces, which formed a totally different ‘fabric’ than that of the urban. Nonetheless, this piece of landscape rug prototyped a new expression of natural patterns and added variety to our Signature Collection rug library.

We are excited to announce a new Limited Edition series of rugs by Elena Manferdini + URBAN FABRIC Rugs, based on Manferdini's 'Building Portraits';
“Architects have a seemingly unlimited faith in the power of the grid, a mastering system that has become dominant in a significant portion of the modern American cityscape. The set of drawings used in the design of this collection of rugs explores the potential of the contemporary grid and vibrant colors. “
Manferdini’s drawings blur lines between fashion and pattern in an architectural context and introduce new contemporary landscapes. The new collection will be unveiled at the ToCo Haus Gallery in Los Angeles on January 27th, 2017.

“URBAN FABRIC Rugs are based on scale maps extruded and meticulously cut out of hand-tufted or hand-knotted New Zealand virgin wool. They are soft city models, as instructive to touch as to view. There is a seriousness to the work—the city plans are very accurate—and, at the same time, an element of fun in their fuzzy tactility.
Conceived of by Andrei Zerebecky and Lukasz Kos, Urban Fabric can be read as a counterpoint to Rem Koolhaas’s generic city critique. The project examines cities not as a ground level experience of bland airports and shopping centers, but from a Google maps vantage point which reveals that city cores remain differentiated from one another in terms of history, urban design, and the constraints of geography. Like these places, no two rugs even of the same city are alike—each is tailored to the individual commission.
Urban Fabric place its bets on difference, clinging to the notion of uniqueness of place in the vein of Camillo Sitte’s City Planning According to Artistic Principles. Inspired by the unique patterns of cities, traditions of rug manufacture and representation the work links urbanism, architecture, textile design, and scale.”
